European golf cart leader now in U.S.

When Kelly Walker and Mike McHugh heard about Big Max, they were intrigued. Both being golfers, they knew a company that was the leader in push carts in Europe could find a place in the United States.

Big Max was started in 1994 by Thomas Reiter in Vienna, Austria – and now the company is making a move into the United States led by CEO Walker and General Manager McHugh, who are based in Tacoma. Big Max is more than just push carts; the company also has a line of golf bags, commercial rental fleets and accessories for both bags and carts. The two hope to challenge the top dogs in the industry.

“Big Max is No. 1 in Europe – and it’s a great product so we want everybody to find out about it in the United States too,” said Walker. “We have different kinds of carts – something for everyone.”

In 1994, Reiter got the idea for the push carts and named the line after his son. The carts took off quickly and now are the leader in the industry in Europe. In 2000, Reiter developed the first three-wheeler push cart that became an overnight smash with golfers.

Walker and McHugh are hoping the company catches fire in the United States like it did across the pond. They rolled out the carts in 2014 and have gotten good response from places like Roger Dunn’s Golf Shops, Edwin Watts Golf Shops and are now with Dick’s Sporting Goods and Golf Galaxy as well. Big Max offers five different models of push carts, with the Blade being the top seller as it folds into a 5-inch profile and weights under 15 pounds. Carts range in price from $189 to $299 and some come with plenty of frills. A couple of the big benefits to the Big Max carts, they all have five-year warranties and the option for customization with accessories such umbrella, bottle and cell phone holders.

“The Pacific Northwest is golf cart country and now we can come in with a different product that should interest people,” said McHugh. “these are top of the line push carts.”
