NW sites for 2018 U.S. Open qualifiers

The Pacific Northwest will host several regional qualifying sites for the 2018 U.S. Open, which will be held June 14-17 at Shinnecock Hills in Southhampton, New York. It will be the fifth U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills. In addition, a Northwest club will also be the site for one of the 12 sectional qualifiers for the U.S. Open.

Four Northwest courses will host the first round of qualifiers for the U.S. Open. Ridgecrest Golf Club in Nampa, Idaho will host May 7, as will Riverside Golf and Country Club in Portland and Meridian Valley Country Club in Kent. Wine Valley in Walla Walla will have a qualifier on May 10.

The Portland Golf Club will serve as the host site for one of 12 sectional qualifiers on Monday June 4. Sectional qualifying, conducted over 36 holes, will be held on Monday, June 4, at 10 sites in the U.S. For the 14th consecutive year, Japan and England will host international sectional qualifying, scheduled for May 21 and June 4, respectively.

Portland (Ore.) Golf Club will host U.S. Open sectional qualifying for the first time since 1998. The club has hosted three USGA championships, including the 1982 U.S. Senior Open. Shadow Hawk Golf Club, in Richmond, Texas, will host a sectional qualifier for the first time since 2008. The club has hosted two USGA championships.

Last year, 9,485 applications were taken from players to try and qualify for the U.S. Open. Players must have a handicap of 1.4 or less to get into the qualifying tournaments. Last year, 21 players advanced through qualifying to reach the U.S. Open, which was held at Erin Hills in Wisconsin.

Ken Venturi (1964) and Orville Moody (1969) are the only players to win the U.S. Open after qualifying through both local and sectional play. Gene Littler (1961), Julius Boros (1963), Jerry Pate (1976), Steve Jones (1996), Michael Campbell (2005) and Lucas Glover (2009) have won as sectional qualifiers.

Online entry applications for the 2018 U.S. Open are scheduled to be available at https://champs.usga.org/index.html with the deadline April 25.

• Tuesday, May 10: Wine Valley Golf Club, Walla Walla.
• Sectional Qualifier: Monday, June 4 at Portland Golf Club. (36 holes).
