Six years ago, Jack Nicklaus agreed to design a second nine at American Lake Veterans Golf Course in Tacoma. Last month, the new Nicklaus Nine opened for play.

Early in 2010, American Lake had finished its clubhouse and rehab center, the Board of Directors wanted to see about getting a second nine for the course. Former PGA Tour player Ken Still of Tacoma knew what to do. Still talked with Nicklaus about creating a new nine. Nicklaus agreed – and for no charge.

The Board of Directors fund raised $4 million for the construction and now, American Lakes Veterans Golf Course has 18 holes, including its Nicklaus Nine.

Both sets of nines meet the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act, making the game easier for those with disabilities.
