Derek Barron of Puyallup got off to a hot start in the first round and never let off the gas pedal as he won the Puget Sound Amateur at Lake Spanaway Golf Course.

Barron fired a two-round total of 140 (67-73) to win the championship by eight shots over former Major League pitcher Erik Hansen. Britten Barker was third at 149 while Mike Froce was fourth at 155 and Jimmy Hayes sixth at 155.

Barron will try and make the jump to the PGA Tour next year by competing in the PGA Tour Qualifying School this year.

In the senior division, Dave Farnam beat Larry Daniels on the second hold of a playoff with a par to win the championship. Both players finished at 145 total for the tournament. First-round leader Steve Johnson withdrew because of injury.
