Wayne Golf Course in Bothell will be closing for good this fall.

The final day of operation could be anytime but there is the possibility of an extension, according to Bothell City Manager Jennifer Phillips.

The unpretentious, affordable public course along the Sammamish River eventually will become Wayne Sammamish Regional Park.

Phillips and Bothell parks director John Keates said funding sources, such as environmental organizations for the regional park, preclude golf.

The front nine at Wayne opened for play in 1931, and the much shorter and less popular back nine opened in 1964. Wellington Hills, another public golf course in the Bothell-Woodinville area, closed in 2012.
