NW golfers get through U.S. Open qualifying stage

Cheng-Tsung Pan, a senior at the University of Washington, shot a 5-under par 67 and took medalist honors in leading the field of 120 players who took part in local qualifying at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash.

Along with Pan, six other players advanced from this local qualifier to the sectional qualifier, which will be held on June 8. The 2015 U.S. Open Championship is being held June 18-21 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.

Among the other players to qualify are Cameron Peck of College Station, Texas, who finished at 3-under par 69. Peck grew up in Olympia. Also qualifying were amateurs Spencer Tibbits of Vancouver, Wash.; Spencer Weiss, a freshman on the University of Washington golf team; and Ahren Young, a sophomore at Seattle University.

In a 7-man playoff for the final two available spots, James Lepp of Abbotsford, B.C., and Kyle Cornett of Mill Creek, Wash. earned a spot.

Other Northwest qualifers
• Darren Black of Seattle, Derek Barron of Tacoma, Wash. and Sean Walsh of Keller, Tex. all finished at even-par and took co-medalist honors in leading the field of 78 players who competed in U.S. Open local qualifying at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla, Wash. Black is from Seattle’s Rainier Golf & Country Club while Barron is a PGA club professional at Tacoma Firs. Walsh is a junior at Gonzaga University in Spokane. Claiming final qualifying spot was amateur Kent Hagen of Covington, Wash.

• Sulman Raza of Eugene fired a 3-under par 68 to lead U.S. Open local qualifying held at Eugene Country Club. Along with Raza, eight more players qualified for sectional qualifying. Amateurs Cody Curteman (Bandon, Ore.) and Jesse Heinly (Bend, Ore.), and professionals Casey Martin (Eugene, Ore.), Nick Sherwood (Albany, Ore.) and John Wise (Portland, Ore.) all qualified by finishing at 1-under par (70) for the day. Also qualifying were amateur Harrison Moir (Portland, Ore.), professional Andrew Buege (Abrams, Wis.) and pro Craig Crandall (San Clemente, Calif.).
