Inactive score posting starts up in November

If you live and keep a handicap in the Pacific Northwest, then you know that the posting of scores takes a break during the winter months. Starting in November, scores for the Oregon Golf Association and Washington State Golf Association are not to be posted for handicap purposes. The Oregon break period runs from Nov. 30, 2013-Feb. 28, 2014. The Washington break period runs from Nov, 14, 2013-Feb. 28, 2014.

However, if you take a golf vacation outside of the Pacific Northwest, those scores are still OK to post. Courses around the country that are accepting scores through the season are all OK to be posted for handicap purposes.

The reason for the inactive scoring period is that many courses in the Pacific Northwest play winter or preferred lies rules during the winter months. And for good reason. The temperatures dip and the courses are soggy and never have a chance to dry out prompting courses to use the winter rules or preferred lies model.

For more information about handicaps you can check the Washington State Golf Association at thewsga.org or the Oregon Golf Association at oga.org.
