Ever wonder what it would be like to own a golf course? Maybe Jack Connelly could give you an answer. He bought one last year and it’s 90 years old. So far it’s been some kind of an “adventure” for Jack and his family. In a future issue of Inside Golf he will reveal all that’s been done at the course to date and what the plans are for the 90th anniversary year ahead

The course is the Highlands, a par 3 “jewel” in Tacoma’s west end. The clubhouse has been remodeled, there’s a new McDuff’s café on site, and the entire course has a new irrigation system.  Everywhere you look there’s something new.  Added water features are numerous. An outdoor fireplace and fire pit are located in the extended patio adjacent to the clubhouse. Fountains are “aflowin!”

Ask a member of the ladies or men’s clubs about all the excitement at the Highlands and they will be quick to tell you “you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!”

Play has increased from the year before last, in 2020, when 28,308 golfers enjoyed “twice the fun, in half the time” and there were 31,639 rounds played in 2021.

Is it any wonder why Highlands has been named one of the top public courses in the state of Washington? That may have been no surprise, but it gave special meaning to the honor when Highlands was the only Par 3 course to make that list and was ranked the 7th best in the state among them all.

Stay tuned for Inside Golf and the Connelly plan for continued improvements and new events will be revealed.Look for a 90th Anniversary at Highlands to become a “once in a lifetime “affair, and you can count on hearing that there will be a return of the Washington State Par 3 Championships.
