Bremertion native and former University of Washington golfer Troy Kelly came up just short in his bid for his first win on the Nationwide Tour. He finished second at the Stadion Classic in Athens, Ga. losing by two shots to winner Russell Henley.
Kelly was tied for the lead after three rounds but couldn’t keep pace with Henley, a senior at the University of Georgia who was playing on his home course.
Henley is a three-time All-American at Georgia who will turn pro later this year. He shot a 3-under 68 to beat Kelly by two shots and win the championship.
Kelly collected the first-place check because Henley is an amateur. Kelly won $99,000 for finishing second and that will go a long ways toward him finishing in the top 25 and earning a repeat trip to the PGA Tour for the 2012 season. Kelly is playing on the Nationwide Tour this year on a medical exemption.
