It’s been a year of getting acquainted for Tacoma’s gem of a par-3 golf course, the Highlands.

The 1,200 yards of beauty has lived-up to every test for record crowds and for golfers of every ability. There is no denying that the #7 rating it has received among the state’s golf challenges has been earned, and should be right up there among Chambers Bay (#1) and the other top choices of that stature.

Under new ownership, Jack Connelly and family, Highlands has captured more than its share of compliments for course conditions and a “just right” experience in playing those shots which regularly make a difference in breaking par. It has lived-up to its byline of “Half the Time, Twice the Fun.”

An awesome first-year as the new home for the Washington State Par-3 Championship only added to its resume. Brett Manke won the event before an excitable crowd and set the stage for an even more well-received response in its sophomore try this season.

Is all of the excitement and praise for the course deserved as such? There’s proof which needs no more than merely looking at “the numbers.” Last year Highlands attracted 33,716 golfers … a record turnout after 15 years of averaging 21,000. The pace this year looks to top that, too.

And the Highlands staff stands ready to show the golfing world it is ready and waiting to live-up to a new achievement in 2023– “the more the merrier.”
